Overview

The lunar South Pole is a priority target for upcoming missions, but it's also one of the harshest thermal environments to operate electronics in, with extreme cold and long stretches without direct sunlight. During a rotation to ES33 as part of the Pathways program, I put together a proposal for a new insulation approach aimed at protecting electronics through those conditions, and it was selected as one of five funded projects in a department-wide Engineering Systems IT&D competition.

What the work covers

  • Proposal development. Wrote and pitched the technical proposal that won the department-wide IT&D funding.
  • Insulation method. Developed a new approach to insulating electronics against the lunar South Pole's extreme thermal environment.
  • ES33 rotation. Carried out the work during a rotation to the ES33 branch as part of the NASA Pathways program.
